Considering Dental Implants? How to Know if You’re a Good Candidate
- Posted on: Sep 15 2016
Did you recently lose a tooth either to decay or some type of accident? Having a lost tooth can not only make you appear to be a bit disheveled, but it can also make things such as chewing food to become a bit more challenging. Luckily, with things such as dental implants, you can help to permanently restore your mouth in only a matter of months. However, in order to be deemed a suitable candidate for dental implants, you need fit the following criteria.
Have Healthy Gums
In order for the dental implant process to actually work, you need to ensure that you have healthy gums. Because a dental rod will be surgically implanted into your gums in order to hold your crown in place, if your gums are weak or unhealthy, the metal rod simply won’t take. If you suffer from gum disease (gingivitis) or any other sort of disease related to your gums, talk to one of the dentist’s at Today’s Dental in order to get you treated as soon as possible, so that you can be deemed a suitable candidate for dental implants.
Have Good Habits
If you are notorious for getting cavities and not taking proper care of your teeth and oral health, then you may not be deemed a good fit for dental implants. Having strong teeth and gums will help ensure that your dental implants stay in place and function properly. Therefore, if you fail to brush your teeth regularly and are prone to cavities, then your implants likely won’t last.
Additionally, if you are a heavy tobacco user, you may not be a good fit either. Tobacco use is known to cause things such as tooth decay and even oral cancers, neither of which will help to strengthen your dental implant.
Have A Healthy Jawbone
If you have a weakened jaw bone or if you suffer from things such as TMJ, then you may not be a suitable candidate for dental implants. Because the metal rod used in dental implant surgery is implanted into your gums and your jawbone, it is important that your jawbone is able to support the implant properly.
As you can see, not everyone is an ideal candidate for dental implants. However, by ensuring that you have healthy gums, good habits, and a healthy jawbone, you may be considered to be a good candidate. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, contact Today’s Dental!
