CEREC™ – Same Day Crowns Edmonton AB

If you have a tooth that is broken or has been severely damaged or weakened by decay or a large filling, we may recommend a crown. Crowns can help to improve the appearance of your teeth and can hold portions of the cracked/weakened tooth together. While a traditional version of crowns has been used in the past, dental technology has developed a new method known as CEREC, which enables us to do same-day crowns.

CEREC™ Same Day Crowns Edmonton ABWhat is CEREC™?

CEREC utilizes CAD-CAM technology to help dentists efficiently develop and insert ceramic restorations in one single appointment. These same-day crowns are made out of the finest dental materials that offer the same level of hardness as your normal teeth. They do not contain metal, so they can help to enhance your smile.

How does CEREC™ work?

Once we determine that a CEREC crown is the right option for you, we take a digital/optical image of the tooth. Rather than filling a tray with impression material that you need to bite into in order to create a mold of your teeth, we use a digital camera to take an image of your tooth.

The CEREC machine and its 3D software are then used to help us create a tooth restoration. Within a few minutes of using the system, we are able to send the design information wirelessly to the office milling machine where a ceramic block is inserted. In about 15 to 20 minutes, an all-ceramic and tooth colored restoration is completed.

We then try on the restoration in the mouth to ensure the bite and fit match perfectly. Then, the same-day crown is bonded and polished to the prepared tooth. Once completed, you are able to go on your way, and since there is no temporary crown, you don’t need to return for a second appointment for a permanent crown!

CEREC™ Crown vs. Standard Crown (Procedure)

When it comes to comparing CEREC and Standard crown procedures, one of the greatest differences is the length of time that the procedure takes. With CEREC restorations, the procedure can be completed on the same day, so the temporary crown required with a standard procedure is not necessary, nor is the waiting time to get the final restoration. These instant crowns can help to reduce sensitivity and pain in addition to the bacterial leakage that can often occur when wearing a temporary crown for a few weeks. After a CEREC procedure, patients are free to brush, floss and eat like they normally would.
